Father’s Day was supposed to be simple that year. I planned a quiet dinner at home with my wife, Emily, and our five-year-old daughter, Lily. While we decorated cupcakes together that afternoon, Lily looked up at me with innocent eyes and asked, “Daddy, can we invite my real dad to dinner too?” At first, I laughed softly, thinking she had confused a story from school or a cartoon. Before I could speak, Lily came running excitedly to the doorway. “See?” she shouted proudly. “I told you my real daddy would come!” Emily covered her mouth in shock before quickly kneeling beside Lily. Inside were drawings from Lily, family photographs, and handwritten notes about the little moments I never realized mattered so much.
